this flat is so still and the streets are so deserted. it could only be a sunday night. the perfect soundtrack to a sunday night after midnight is a record by art tatum and ben webster called 'the tatum group masterpieces'. it's just gorgeous and is so perfect for this time. i think some of the songs appeared in the woody allen movie 'september'. it's really beautiful music. if it started raining heavily now it would be even more perfect. or if this music was playing and i was in new york city in one of those loft apartments and the rain was bouncing off the skylight window above..
so i opened for simple kid tonight. the place was totally packed and i'll be honest, i was scared before i went up coz in my brain i was convinced that i'd just be a distraction before the main event that everyone had turned up to see. i settled into my set pretty quickly though and really enjoyed playing. it was fantasic fun and i'm so chuffed at the reaction i got both during the gig and afterwards. simple kid's set was superb, i really must investigate the use of a laptop and a drum machine; the sound he got was incredible. it was just one of those nights where everything fell into place. it's looking like my album will be out in may which i'm pretty excited about. i really need to talk slowly when i introduce myself though. there's always stuff i wish i'd done differently when i think about things after a show. but i'm pleased i chucked a new song 'i'm up a tree' into the mix and the success of tonight's show means that i'm looking forward to friday's gig even more. sunday nights, a definite time for reflection.....
i love 'fugitive motel' by elbow. i've been watching the video all morning and it's been turned up as loud as i can go

busy time at the moment, which is good......i need to do alot more though. we've got sound clips ready to go up on the site but more web space is needed to house this little video i've made. i'm going to make a few videos i think coz it's fun to do. i wish i could draw, or operate flash or something then i could do a little animation. i've always wanted to do that. there's so much to learn these days, so much to do and see. information overload. so you've got to be selective coz time is valuable. the next video i'll make is to go with a song of mine called 'someone's got a crush on me'. i would love to do an animation for this and i've got an idea in mind, but i don't know how to. the other plan is to go camping in summer and film the video then. i've got some ideas for it. the first one i've made, for 'the sore foot song' was really an experiment but i'm quite pleased with how it turned out and the people who helped out have been great. i'm not sure how it'll look streamed on the site, but it's all a learning curve really.
so the weekend's been and gone. again. thank goodness for vic's bar at the art school. i've not been for a little while but it was great on saturday night, really good atmopshere and some really cracking music. along with the national pop league and the winchester club, these are my fav places to be after hours at the weekend.
on sundays i have this weird thing i've been doing recently.....you see, i go to the botanic gardens alot when i wanna clear my head and think things through calmly. there's a little description of the botanic gardens here (http://www.hyndl.demon.co.uk/westend/kibble/kibble.htm).
anyway, i always go after 3.30pm, usually on a saturday or sunday afternoon. the reason i go at around this time is coz i've figured that that's when they turn the 'rain' on in the tropical (hothouse) section ......it's lovely, the sound is great and i find it really soothing as it cascades from the ceiling and bounces on all the plants' giant green leaves. i went on sunday before getting my shopping and walked around for 45 mins trying to think of a title for this album. i'm sure the gardener bloke in charge must have recognised me from last week and was wondering why i was walking round and round in a circle. but i mean i could have been learning about plants from indonesia and malaysia for all he knew. i was doing that a little bit anyway whilst mulling over names for this record.
it was cold outside too and it felt snug and safe in there. a girl was drawing one of the plants. i wish i could draw, but all i could do was walk around in a circle trying to think. by the time i was about to leave, i realised that i'd just had a free sauna coz i was cooking like a boil-in-the-bag curry in my parka, sweating out all the toxins from the night before. all for free which is great. so that was my sunday. oh, and the album is now called calycophyllum sprucenum.
or maybe not.
